529: As a teen, I did Taekwondo a lot, so at one point, I was able to do 72 push-ups! I can't do that anymore. 🤣🤦‍♂️😖

From someone who grew up in the middle east this sounds horrifying. We had to do two days of fitness at PE just to see how much we improved but it was never that humiliating since we were only comparing it to our own scores. The only thing that can compare to this is the beep test which seems tame compared to this (and at least the kids in my class were pretty chill about it)

What's important to note is that these national tests weren't invented to be a source of judgment and grading, but rather to collect data. They were invented to be a census. It was just the inescapable fact that it's easier to measure 50 judgy kids at once rather than one at a time. The 50% and 85% prizes were there just to be a little goal, so then kids would actually try instead of brushing it off. (And if you got graded on the national test, that was because your school decided to be pr!cks and do that.)

Haha that reach test!! Omg. I’m 5’10” and my beat friend was 5’1”. When we sit down we’re the same height. Im ALL leg zero torso. (Yea, i look really weird in a swimsuit. And that test still gives me ptsd 😂 I was super flexible too! Could lay my whole torso ON my legs while reaching but I just wasn’t ever long enough!! My teacher based her GRADE off these tests. I was in great shape. Played several sports but couldn’t get an A in gym because of that damn reach.

My mother moved around a lot for….reasons. I was in 16 different schools by the time I was in the 5th grade. I changed schools 2-4 times a year and it seemed like every time I transferred, it was STUPID MOFO PRESIDENTS FITNESS TEST WEEK. I swear to all that anyone holds holy that I took that that thing at least 65+ times over the entire course of my childhood. I rocked at sit-ups and V-sits. Pull-ups and T H E M I L E still haunt my memories. Near the end, I would just hang from the bar until the coach finally gave up and let me drop. The Mile? Haha, punks, class is 48 minutes and imma use every single one of those minutes up walkin' .

Love all of the TryGuys videos! suggestion; each guy tries to learn a different martial art style and then they come together and show it off after a month or even in a fight! What do you think?

They need a separate video of them doing the pacer….lol That was the whole gym class activity…

Zach should 10000000000% get on TRT. He might experience for the first time in his life what it's like to be a man.

  • Laura Moore

    Posted July 16, 2021 3:22 pm

Oh man, I had a totally different experience with this. I was terrible at sports and a nerd and not looked upon nicely in gym class, but I was a gymnast. So I did 16 pullups which was more than anyone (boy or girl) in my grade. I was so proud. But I couldn't run a full mile, so there's that.

As a portuguese I never knew that the fitness test we do is the same as the American ( we just don't do the pull ups and have some extra exercises). I can assure you that this shit is terrible

  • Kira Brighton

These were always HORRIBLE. Like Zach, I dreaded the mile especially: running was always extremely painful for me, even for fairly short distances. Turns out I have a bunch of chronic illnesses! Whoo.

Haven’t done this since 7th grade. I was medically exempt in 8th grade and all the way through high school. I’d probably fail miserably now.

I was in 5th grade in 2012 and we had all these tests but they weren’t called presidential test and we didn’t get patches. They were different by gender I think. Definitely giving flashbacks though 😂

Ohmygod fitness testing made me so self conscious. The first time I failed the mile I cried cuz I realized I wasn't good enough at running. Self esteem does not do well. Can we just not do this? To this day I'm still embarrassed of actually doing fitness stuff/working out especially in groups of people because it was so embarrassing in elementary school.

Edit: Just realized they didn't have the backs of their hands facing them like we used to do during pull ups. Was it just my school that had you face your forearms out?

  • Amy Wishart

    Posted July 16, 2021 3:22 pm

Egads. I remember doing this in 5th grade in 1975. Girls had to do the flexed arm hang (chin above the bar) instead of the pull-ups the boys did. I was no athlete but managed to come in 2nd to Carol I forgot her last name. It was the only thing I was any good at during these tests. Great job, guys!
